Pacific; California to Gulf of California. Surface to 110-183 m (360-600 ft). Elsewhere

Alopias vulpinus (Bonnaterre 1788). Common Thresher. Largest within our range 5.5 m (18
ft); elsewhere to at least 6.1 m (20 ft). Worldwide in all warm seas; Goose Bay, British
Columbia to Chile. In Indian Ocean to at least 366 m (1,208 ft). (Eschmeyer et al. 1983,
Compagno 1984).

temperate and tropical
seas; Gulf of Alaska to Gulf of California; also Panama to Chile. Mostly shallow water, taken to

Carcharhinus leucas (Valenciennes 1841). Bull Shark. Likely to 3.4 m (11 ft); recorded to 3
m (9.3 ft). Widespread in warm seas; possibly southern California, southern Baja California
to Peru. Less than 1 m to 152 m (502 ft). (Eschmeyer et al. 1983, Compagno 1984).
Carcharhinus limbatus (Valenciennes 1839). Blacktip Shark. 2.55 m (8.4 ft). Worldwide in
tropical waters; San Diego, southern California southward. Inshore to 30 m (99 ft).

Carcharhinus longimanus (Poey 1861). Oceanic Whitetip Shark. 2.7 m (8.9 ft); reported to
3.5 m (11.4 ft). Worldwide in tropical waters; north to Gaviota, southern California and
Monterey Bay, central California. Surface to about 200 m (660 ft). An oceanic species,
occurring within our range during warm water years. Surface to at least 152 m (502 ft).

Galeocerdo cuvier (Peron and Lesueur 1822). Tiger Shark. 7.3 m (24 ft), largest in
California 2.7 m (9 ft). Worldwide in tropical seas; southern California (possibly north to
southeastern Alaska - Karinen et al. 1985) to Peru. Inshore to possibly 140 m (462 ft).
